Try This Instead of Making Resolutions

Jan 06, 2022

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, do any of these sound familiar?

  • “This year, I will reach and maintain my size from high school!”
  • “This year, I will not eat carbs!”
  • “This year, I will go to the gym twice a day, every day, and run six marathons and three triathlons and… and…”

Whoa! Hold on a second… I hope you know I’m just joking here to make a point. Most people’s New Year’s resolutions never survive to February, as you might’ve experienced yourself. It’s because, too often, we make Huge Life Statements that are, well, unrealistic, frustrating and maybe even impossible!

Here’s a better way.

Set micro goals that are also doable, specific, & measurable.

For example, instead of saying, “I will get my finances in order,” say you will save a certain amount of money each month.

Instead of overcommitting to exercise, set a micro goal of purposefully moving your body every day for at least 30 minutes. And maybe another to run, hit the gym, or take a yoga class three times a week. (I’m just making up these examples rhetorically as examples!)

Make a list each morning of the day’s micro goals, and check off each item as you complete it. And set an intention that will allow you to make amendments as the day progresses.

There’s good research to show this approach works better for many people. Plus, it just makes sense – don’t you think?
